Will the EU manage to ban pig castration by 2018?

The surgical castration of male pigs gives rise to a number of welfare issues, in order to tackle this, the ‘European Declaration on alternatives to surgical castration of pigs’ set a final goal to phase out surgical castration by 2018. Published today in the journal Porcine Health Management, a new study reviews the progress of this declaration across 24 countries and looks at the alternatives to surgical castration being used.
