A milestone for swine veterinary research

Today marks the launch of Porcine Health Management (PHM), the official journal of the European College of Porcine Health Management (ECPHM) and European Association of Porcine Health Management (EAPHM). This guest blog from Joaquim Segalés, president of the ECPHM, and Enric Marco, president of the EAPHM, outlines the background and ambitions of this new journal.

The new journal Porcine Health Management (PHM) has launched today. This represents a great milestone for the ECPHM and EAPHM, the latter representing a wide variety of professionals in the swine industry. A long time ago, these two organizations had a dream to bring their Diplomates, associates, and also the rest of the world, a high-quality open access journal to publish information on all areas of swine health and management, including all related disciplines. This dream now comes to fruition and the ‘newborn’ has the global vocation of reaching pig veterinarians around the world.

Just 11 years ago, there was no pan-European association that could join professionals of the swine industry on the continent. A first landmark was the creation of a species-oriented College within the scope of the European Board of Veterinary Specialization (EBVS), the ECPHM. This new College was a first step towards the advancement of health and management in porcine production at the herd level in Europe, with a view to increasing the competency of those who practice in this field. After a decade of existence, the ECPHM is nowadays consolidated, with more than 140 Diplomates and 50 residents around Europe, and with the intention of promoting research and other contributions to the science and practice of porcine herd health management via this new journal.

The organization of the European Symposium of Porcine Health Management (ESPHM) in 2009 under the umbrella of the ECPHM, soon prompted another newborn in 2010: the EAPHM. This association aims to serve as a meeting point for industry professionals, promoting and facilitating contacts between them. Very importantly, the EAPHM aims to represent veterinarians and other professionals working in the swine sector in the various legislative committees and executives in Europe, as well as to play an important role in the continuous postgraduate education of swine practitioners. This latter objective can be greatly served by the creation of a new journal, which will bring new and updated knowledge to professionals not only in Europe, but around the world.

As a consequence, PHM is a proud new journal supported by the two main organizations representing swine veterinarians in Europe, and we really hope that it will deliver the knowledge, tools and know-how needed to improve our professional life. We hope that PHM will be among your favourite scientific journals, as well as a platform where you want to share your experience and the results of your research. We wish the very best for PHM!
