The ancient origins of the Chow Chow

East Asian dog breeds like the Chow Chow are amongst the most ancient breeds of dog and represent a basal lineage of dog evolution. To further investigate the origins of these breeds, a study published in BMC Genomics compares the genome sequences of Chow Chows, gray wolves and other dogs to provide a fascinating insight into the development of East Asian breeds and the distinctive features of the Chow Chow.

International Women’s Day

Wednesday 8th March, 2017, marks International Women’s Day. The theme this year is #BeBoldForChange. This is a global day, observed since the early 1900’s, to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women as well as marking a call to action for accelerating gender parity. Different regions in the world celebrate in various fashion. It is a public holiday in certain countries which include Afghanistan, Belarus, Cambodia, Moldova and Russia whilst the day is declared a holiday only for women in China, Madagascar and Nepal.

Will my children survive antimicrobial resistance?

In the wake of the World Health Organization’s recent publication of a global priority list of antibiotic-resistant bacteria the increasing risk of antibiotic resistance has become even more apparent. In the following blog post Sheldon Stone highlights the need for better reporting, using the ORION guidelines, for outbreak reports of nosocomial infection. There is clearly a need for as much high quality data as possible about these infections and the ORION guidelines provide a valuable tool for researchers hoping to maximize the impact of their research.
