Good news for Google Scholar users

Google Scholar is a great free resource for finding where a published article has been cited.

It already identified roughly as many citations, for most articles, as commercial services such as Web of Science and Scopus. But according to Peter Brantley, of the Digital Library Federation, Google Scholar is about to become significantly more comprehensive, as Elsevier has reportedly agreed to allow its journal content to be indexed by the service. The previous lack of coverage of Elsevier content wasone of the major criticisms of Google Scholar’s free service.

This is great news for open access and for  BioMed Central authors in particular, since every BioMed Central article is directly linked to Google Scholar. As Google Scholar expands, the number of citing articles that can be found for any BioMed Central article expands too, allowing the impact of individual open access research articles to be clearly demonstrated.
